CIUTAT VELLA: Barcelona has its beginning in the roman town of Barcino (II s BC). During the middle age (XIII ? XIV s AC) the town bring up to be one of most important city of the Mediterranean sea. This situation gave a gothic character to the city. A surrounding defensive wall was built to protect the city and its citizens. Three offsets of this wall were needed to assume the increase of its population. Small pieces of these walls are still part of ancient?s buildings. Nowadays the old Barcino is the quarter of Ciutat Vella. It maintains the atmosphere of the old gothic town, with small zigzaging streets plain of young people at bar?s terraces. The area is nowadays a lively centre during night and day, offering a wide variety of cultural, leisure and gastronomic possibilities with its museums, theatres, bookshops, specialist food, wine and craft shops, designs studios, cafes, music bars and numerous superb restaurants.
